The procedure is performed as an outpatient basis, with mild sedation or topical anesthesia given to the patient. It normally lasts a couple of hours to up to four hours. Hair transplantation is not a painful procedure, and does not have any major side effects. The area to be treated is shampooed and treated with antibacterial chemical before surgery to prevent any infections later on.

The grafts that have to be implanted during surgery are already extracted using the Strip Harvesting Technique or the Follicular Unit Extraction. The donor area is almost always the back or sides of the scalp which already has hair growing. The Strip Harvesting Technique involves the removal of a strip containing a large number of follicular units, whereas the Follicular Unit Extraction Technique involves removal of one follicular unit at a time from the donor area. The chest, legs or face may also be used as the donor area if hair is to be transplanted at other places instead of the scalp. During the procedure, very small micro blades or fine needles are used to puncture the site for transplantation to receive the grafts. These grafts are placed in a predetermined density and pattern and angled appropriately to follow the hairs realistic pattern. The grafts are individually inserted in place as a final part of the procedure.

Once the procedure is complete, it usually takes 4 to 6 months before you see new hair growth. Patients usually suffer from hair thinning or “shock loss” which is a temporary side effect of the surgical procedure. Some patients also experience swelling of the areas of the scalp and forehead. If proper care is not taken, itching and scabs may form and infection can also result. Proper care should be taken according to the instructions given by the surgeon to avoid any post-operative complications.

Patients have experienced natural looking results after successful hair transplantation procedures. Normally, one transplant session is enough to get the desired results. Some people may need to have a second transplantation session after years of the first session, if more hair loss continues after the transplant. The second session is required to replace odd patches of hair or baldness which may have resulted due to continued hair loss.
